Our Magazine Advert

This is our finished Magazine Advert. We created this by taking photos and then deciding which looked best for a magazine advert. We then edited the photo onto the chosen background and added the font, colour and layout. We wanted it to match the same house style as our digipak so we included the same background, colours and font. 

The review helps promote the artist as KISS FM are a well known radio station and our target audience listen to songs that station plays, therefore this will attract a similar audience than that of similar artists played on KISS FM. We also put links to Inna's facebook and twitter than fans can follow and keep up to date with her and her new music, this will help advertise her new single and promote her as an artist.

We decided to put the name of the artist and the song in bright pink to follow the house colours which we choose so that the font would stand out and as the heading of the advert it is the first thing you read. We also wanted to put the words 'out now' in bright pink so this also stands out as this is an important piece of information as well as where to download it from.

Magazine Advert Influences

Here are some more influences for our magazine advert. The main correlation between all magazine adverts we saw were that they all continued the theme from the album cover and advertised one main single as well as the whole album. We plan to use a similar layout in terms of headlining the artist Inna and the main song title/name of album Crazy, Sexy, Wild. Each one of these adverts takes a recognisable image from their albums/digipaks and a signiture font which is recognisable from those artists. We also plan to include the same information including a release date and some sort of positive review in form of promotion.

The Katy Perry advert is probably the most similar to our design in terms of the signiture font and continued theme from the album cover/digipak. It also includes a positive review '#1 smash hit "I Kissed A Girl"' and a release date just like what we want.

Magazine Advert Analysis

A magazine advert is designed in order to make a target audience aware of an artist or bands new product. Magazines are great places to advertise because everyone that reads that magazine will fall under the artist/band's target audience and therefore it is a great way to raise awareness of themselves and their image, therefore make more money in the hope of gaining more fans. Advertising in magazines also can help spread news using word of mouth especially using social networking like Twitter. Adverts can be used to promote a new single, album or to promote a new product released by an artist or a tour/concert that the artist is performing at.

An example is Jessie J promoting her new debut album 'Who You Are' in a magazine. It is being advertised hear in the hope that her fans will see it and go and buy the album.

In this advert, the focus is on the artist Jessie J, she is looking 'at you' which implies she is trying to gain your attention and get you to read on. Her name as a logo in gold has implications that she is trying to be the best she can be. Also the fact that the rest of the writing is small implies that the main selling point is her, not her music. Her fans will react to her face rather than reading about the release date. The image is also the album cover. This has been chosen so that fans would recognise the image and probably instantly know that the advert is about her album, almost like a reminder to go buy it.

 

Our Digipak

This is the finished 6 panel digipak product. To create this, we took photos in different poses and then picked which ones were best to use. The pictures were then edited onto the chosen background and then we picked the fonts, colours, design and layout order.

We used a glitter background and hot pink font to create a fun pop look, this will hopefully correctly portray the type of music played by Inna including our chosen song 'Crazy, Sexy, Wild'. These colours and backgrounds also follow our chosen branding house colours and themes, as to create a strong recognisable image around the artist.

We based the other panels of the digipak around the front cover as we wanted there to be a theme throughout. We also also added in some lyrics of the song to make it more than just images and something different.

The only copyrighted image we used taken from the internet was the barcode as we wanted to make the back cover look realistic and professional. All of the other images we used were taken with our own camera.





Creating the Digipak & Magazine Advert

Creating the Style of the Digipak

The front cover of the digipak is the most important as this is what the viewers see first which then gives them   their first impression of the artist. We came up with a range of ideas for the front cover to see what looked best. We knew what image and font we wanted to use, however the colours we couldn't decide on.

This was our first idea. We created the background using solid colours in Sony Vegas. We thought the bright pink stood out and would be eye catching as it was also one of our house colours. We liked this design however we decided to try some other ideas out.

For our second design we had a look what it would look like with a black background, however we realised this then blended in too much with the black fur coat and so was probably not the best design. We liked having the fonts in different colours as it still fitted in with the house style but also made them stand out from eachother.

Our third design involved a glittery background which we used a piece of glitter craft paper to take a photo of. Although there were shadows around the edge we thought this looked better as the background wasn't all one colour or shade. We put the font in pink so it stood out and both the background and font matches our house style. We decided to use this design as the front cover of our digipak and will continue the theme throughout.

Choosing the Font

We decided to use font number 2 as this was clear and easy to read which is important for a font when advertising. We also thought, although it's simple it still works with the image as we want it too look professional but also not be too much with the other images. We will use this font in both the digipak and the magazine advert.

What is a Digipak? Analysis and Influences

Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold or 'book-style' paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD attached to the inside. It usually consists of 6 panels and is used for CD singles or special edition CD's. It can be an alternative to jewel cases. Here is an example of a digipak template:

Here is an example of a real special edition digipak. It focuses on the artist as the selling point and was given away as a special edition pack through a facebook competition which Rihanna's team organised in order to get Rihanna's new album promoted in a new way:

In her digipak the focus is on the artist Rihanna. There are close ups of her face because she is the selling point and the whole pack is based on a colour scheme of reds and pinks. This implies that the album could be mainly about romance and love songs.

 

Another example is Katy Perry. She had such a strong theme of a 'candyland' and this is displayed in the digipak images. This also includes close-ups and sexy poses and similar to Rihanna's, the theme continues onto the CD. This theme implies that her songs are mostly fun, pop songs.

 

Benefits of digipak's are that it is made in a different way so may last longer than a jewel case. It also creates a new product out of something that has already been sold because it is 'special edition' creating more promotion and this hopefully meas that fans would buy the album again because it is special edition. It is also better for the environment as it is made from recycable materials like paper and plastic only.

However, drawbacks of using a digipak is that they can get worn out and break just like a jewel case. And they are more expensive because their USP is that they are special edition, this may effect sales, as people can get a normal version of the album for cheaper.

 

Branding

We discussed what we wanted our digipak and magazine advert to look like and decided on bright colours. Overall we want to follow these four house colours:

Sparkly Silver












Black and White (Zebra Print)








Leopard Print










We decided to go with these as they represent the theme of the video which is fun and care free. The zebra print was influenced from the shoe chair scene and leopard print represents the wild side within the video. The pink and silver was chosen for the girly audience that the video is targeted at.
In terms of font, we wanted something fun, but more importantly clear and easy to read. The images should be bold and stand out to attract the audience.
On our Twitter page, we used a picture of the artist in a leopard print swimsuit, bright pink background for the information section and a zebra print background for the whole page.
This theme is also continued into the use of the digipak and magazine advert where the font was in hot pink and the background used was the sparkly silver.

 

Changes to the Storyboard

After creating the final product, we looked back at our storyboard to compare what was different and what have been changed. Here is our storyboard:

The first red scene was the poses againt walls and poles that we wanted the artist and the other girls to do. Unfortunately we couldn't find a suitable location for this and so we had to discard of the idea. We did however shoot a scene in which the artist is pretending to spray paint against a wall, although we decided not to use the footage as there was no graffiti on it and therefore didn't look realistic.

The second red scene was girls dancing with disco lights in the background. We did get footage of the girls dancing however we didn't put disco lights on as it seemed childish, we thought about editing in flashing lights however this didn't look as good as we had hoped.

We also originally planned to have the video about the 5 girls but we decided to change it to 4 as 5 seemed a bit crowded.

The third red scene was a dance sequence. We decided that although this would be a very good way of promoting the song as music videos with a dance are always quite successful, however we decided that as none of us are dancers this probably wasn't the best idea as it may look uncomfortable and childish.

The fourth red scene was the girls throwing glitter in the air, and then putting the footage in slow motion as it falls down. We realised that the glitter wouldn't show up on camera very well and would have to use something else, however other objects may not fall as gracefully so we decided to leave this scene out.

The fifth red scene was wrapping the police tape around the artist or stealing it from a taped up house. We decided to use the tape as a background in the police lip sync instead as we felt this made the scene more brighter and interesting to watch.

Originally, the video was mainly going to be about the girls being wild and doing rebellious acts such as stealing police tape and spraying graffiti, however due to location struggles we had to discard of some of these ideas and focused the storyline more on the love interest. This worked out well as listening to the lyrics, it suggests that's what the song is actually about.

Diary Of A Day Shooting 5

Friday 4th January 2013

3:00pm Arriving at Chloe's house,  we began to set up the location in her bedroom. This time, we decided to put a white bed sheet up against her bed for the background and have the shoe chair in front of it. Hair, makeup and clothes didn't take too long as only one person was to be in the shot

3:30pm We put the music in the speakers on repeat and flipped the screen of the video camera around so that Scarlett could see if she was in the shot as she would be moving throughout the song. We had a problem  as we couldn't fit the whole of the chair in as the white sheet wasn't big enough to to hide all of the background if we were zoomed out so far. We decided to get Scarlett's top half in the shot as this is most important and you could still see the chair was shoe shaped. We shot the footage with more in the background than we would show as we wanted to have the full chair in the scene so that when editing, we could zoom in on different places, for example a tilt on the artist.

4:30pm After playing the song a number of times and trying out different poses on the chair, we decided we had enough footage and stopped filming. We made sure to look back on the footage as we didn't do this last time and hadn't realised how bad the location looked before. We liked the idea of having a white material background, although you could see drapes in the material however we quite liked this look and decided to keep it.

Diary of a Day Shooting 4

Friday 7th December 2012

4:00 As soon as we arrived to Chloe's house from school, we began getting ready to film as we wanted to make sure we had enough time to do it all. As we were getting ready, we filmed closeups of the girls putting makeup on and doing their hair as this is what we wanted to show in the music video. We thought it would look more realistic if we really were getting ready. We also had an idea to look into the camera getting ready as if it was a mirror as this could be used in the music video although we hadn;t previously thought of the idea. This took quite a long time as we wanted a range of shots including makeup, hair, trying clothes and shoes on etc.

5:20 Ahead of schedule, we prepared for the next scene in which Scarlett had to lip sync to the song on a shoe shaped chair. We struggled to find a good location for it as the chair wouldn't fit through the door frame to go into another room. We eventually found a wall of Chloe's bedroom that didn't have any furniture in the way however there were radiators in the shot. We decided to cover these up with animal print clothing as this is still the house style for our video. Although we should've prepared more for this scene, we filmed anyway just in case though we don't like the results and hope to reshoot this but using a piece of material for the background.

6:00 When the location was prepared we finally began filming. We played the full song 4 times ensuring that Scarlett changed poses throughout to make it different. Although we don't plan to use this footage, looking through it we can see what poses work and what don't so we know what to do for next time. We also thought about changing the outfit as it blended in to the chair a bit too much.

6:30 After going through the song and doing closeups, we decided we had enough footage. Although it wont be used, the footage will be uploaded in a seperate blog compared to the reshoot. We made a video explaining what we thought went well and what could've been improved for this day of shooting.

Diary of a Day Shooting 3

Wednesday 2nd January 2013

2:00pm Everyone arrived at Scarlett's house which was going to be the location of filming. We spent the first  hour doing hair, make-up and checking costumes were okay. We also set up the camera in the room we were using to check we could get some good shots.

2:45pm Slightly ahead of schedule, we began filming in the party scene location. We started off by doing some shots, however as most of the people were driving we decided to use water instead of vodka for safety issues as we had to do the shot more than once. We made sure to get a range of shots including close-ups of the artist and important scenes to the storyline. We put on party music to get everyone in the mood so the footage would look realistic. We got some good shots however to make it look more realistic, we could have made some more extras in the background or shot at a real party as it looks a bit set up.

4:30pm We then noticed it was beginning to get dark outside so decided to film our outside footage. We wanted it to be dark as it would need to look like evening time, however we didn't want it too dark so that it was bad lighting. To film this scene, we had Bobby driving his car slowly down the road, whilst Megan was in the back with the boot open, filming. The girls then walked towards the car as it drove away from them, staying at the same distance apart. We originally had some problem with the lighting but had the idea to get a light up on someones phone and put it near the camera. This worked well and gave us better lighting.

5:00pm We then shot the arriving to the party scene, we shot the girls from the outside going into the house aswell as from the inside, coming into it. We did this so we could show some continuity when editing the video. We had to do the take a few times to make sure we were in the same positions as we only had one camera so had to film them seperately.

5:30pm We had decided we wanted to reshoot the sparkler scene in a darker location as before we filmed during the day and it hadn't looked to good. As it was still a good lighting for filming but getting dark, we decided it was a good time to reshoot. We went by a fence near a field and lit the sparklers, however because of the wind it was quite hard to get them lit and this took some time. The reshoot was successful as the sparklers showed up a lot better in the dark, and we had made sure to get ones with a bigger spark than last time.

Diary of a Day Shooting 2

Wednesday 14th November 2012

1:45 We were meant to start 15 minutes earlier however a previous meeting that us and the other girls who will be in the scene slightly overrun. We realised this could be a problem as we were already on a tight schedule as we had to finish filming by 3:00 as we were filming during the school day. As soon as everyone was out of the meeting we went onto the back field and found a space with a lot of trees in the background but also didn't have a lot of shadow as the sun was slightly out. We got into our outfits and prepared the makeup.

2:10 We tested out the sparklers to make sure that they worked and showed up on camera, although the spark on the sparklers was actually quite small. We had a bit of trouble lighting the sparklers as there was quite a bit of wind which affected this.

2:20 We started by filming group scenes of all of us with the sparklers. We put the song on to get us at the right sort of beat so it would go with the music. We also made sure there was a big enough distance between eachother for safety reasons.

2:40 After the group scenes we did some individual scenes where we filmed just one person with a sparkler at a time. These shots will be used as quick cutaways within the music video as this is often seen in pop musi video to make it more interesting.

3:00 We finished filming on schedule which was lucky as we had a certain amount of time to finish it in yet it didn't feel rushed. After filming we created a video explaining what we thought went well and what could've gone better for this day of shooting.

Diary of a Day Shooting 1

Monday 19th November 2012

1:00 We arrived at Scarlett's house which was the location for our lip syncing scene. We discussed outfits and decided on a casual look for our first scene. This was set just outside Scarlett's house in an alley way with brick walls. We wanted a rebellious scene so we thought graffiti would be a good idea. This took a little bit longer than planned as we couldn't decide on an outfit that would suit the scene.

2:10 Hair and makeup went a bit quicker than we expected as we had already planned what we wanted. This bought us back on schedule meaning we'd have more time to film. Straight hair and bright pink lipstick were used in this scene as we felt the pink would look wild and rebellious.

2:30 We went into the alley way and set up the camera preparing to film. We chose to do this scene first as it's outside and we wanted to make sure there was good lighting. Using a can of pink hairspray disguised as a spray paint can, Scarlett pretended to put grafitti on the wall. Occasionally, we had people walking through the alley way but we made it clear that we weren't actually vandelising and just filming for media.

3:30 As the alley way scene took quicker than we expected, we had more time on our hands to set up the next location. We bought some fake police tape of Ebay.com and used bluetack to stick it to a white wall in Scarletts house. We put strips of it all over the wall at different angles to represent a police scene. We set the camera up to make sure it fit all in the frame and looked good.

4:00 We then changed the makeup so that Scarlett was wearing red lipstick as we thought this represented danger but also sexiness. These are the two things we wanted the police outfit to represent. The police outfit was worn with heels to create a more feminine look aswell as props such as a police hat, baton and handcuffs.

4:30 We began filming with the music playing in the background to make sure the lip syncing would match. We shot close ups of the heels, handcuffs and the stars face as this is often seen in music videos. We went through the song 5 times to make sure that we got all the footage we needed, making it easier to edit.

5:30 After an hour of filming this scene, we decided we had enough footage and finished filming. We filmed a video saying what we thought went well and what we could have prepared more for etc.
